Carmina Burana

"Carmina Burana" (especially the grand opening piece “O Fortuna”) by Carl Orff is one of the most famous compositions of the 20th century. "Carmina Burana" is spectacular and brilliant glorification of life and the sun. This composition was created in 1937 for the choir, soloists and orchestra. It´s based on poems found in Benediktbeuern abbey in Alps and written by monks and their students in the 13th century. Poems talk about love, nature and the pleasures of wine.

“Carmina Burana” is impressive with its dramatical power and theatrical music, Orff´s melody is simple and the unique rhythm is pulsative and suggestive. The mastery of particularizing the barbaric element is only comparable with Stravinski´s “Holy Spring”. "Carmina Burana" is made of primeval strength and energy. The main idea of songs is to take delight in love, no matter what destiny brings on your way. Orff has united medieval age and present-day into eternal anthem to the vitality of the human nature.
