Alessandro Manzoni’s short story I promessi Sposi(The Betrothed) was Giuseppe Verdi’s (1813–1901) favourite piece of Italian literature since he first read it in his early teens. Verdi only had the chance to meet Manzoni once in person, but the writer had an immense influence on him with his patriotic works.
The premiere of Verdi’s Requiem in the memory of Alessandro Manzoni took place on May 22nd 1874, exactly one year after Manzoni’s death, at the church of San Marco in Milan with the composer himself acting as the conductor.
